When it comes to Persian music, Lotfi seems to have a Midas touch. In his hands, old neglected instrumental pieces and songs, have flourished into fresh, dynamic, and timeless pieces that eventually turned into priceless classics of Persian music. As a musician, with his flawless technique in playing tar and setar, accompanied by his innovative approach, creativity, and deep-emotional quality, Lotfi has established a new standard in aesthetics in Persian music. He has made numerous recordings both as a solo artist and with major Iranian musicians such as Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Shahram Nazeri, Hossein Alizadeh, and Parviz Meshkatian.
Lotfi’s first achievement in music came about with winning the first prize in Iran's Young Musicians Festival in 1964. Later, he started his studies at the National Conservatory in Tehran under Habibollah Salehi and Master Ali Akbar Shahnazi and studied western classical music and the violin as well. His long list of eminent teachers and mentors include Abdollah Davami, Hossein Dehlavi, Hormozi, and Nour-Ali Boroumand. He joined the faculty of Fine Arts at Tehran University in 1973 and later became the Head of the School of Music at Tehran University. Lotfi continued his collaboration with Radio and Television and co-founded the Shayda Ensemble in 1974. Sheyda has always been active in promotion and preservation of Iranian Classical Music through music education and production. In 1987, he expanded the organization by bringing it to the United States where he began to refresh it with addition of young talents and some of best musicians in Iran. Their last concert in 2007 was a sold-out event (7500 seats) in Niavaran Palace in Tehran.
A highly talented and accomplished Iranian Musician, Composer, Guitarist, and a member of American Guitar Society, Babak had his first experience with music under the direction of his mentor and renowned teacher, Shahrokh Partovi. He began learning music and Flamenco style guitar at the age of ten. He then followed his passion by studying with one of the masters in guitar, Simon Aivazian. By the age of eighteen, he was a professional musician. His first album, Gray Rain, was released in 1990 followed by the Blue Rain. His third album, Shadow of My Own, contained vocals based on poets such as Hafez, Molana, Baba Taher, and Nima. At this time, Babak started his collaboration with Googoosh, the diva of Iranian music on her album, Zoroaster. Later, he was asked to compose, arrange and lead Googoosh's orchestra for her tour around the world. During this tour, Babak completed his solo album, 'Magic', in the US.
Babak moved to Canada in 2000 and he produced some albums and worked with different singers and artists such as Soli, Sogand, and Meysam Bakhtiari. He also performed in different venues such as Air Canada Centre, Toronto Centre for the Arts, Ontario Science Centre, and Toronto Beaches Jazz Festival.
He then moved to Los Angeles in 2006 and became a member of American Guitar Society. Currently he teaches and performs in different places in the US, and he leads Faramarz Aslaniʼs band and also working with singers and great musicians for his recent projects.
Baarbad Music Group is a non-for profit organization, founded by Mehdi Rezania in 2004 with the goal of promoting the culture of traditional music by means of novel presentations. The band has held several concerts on several genres from Classical Persian to Fusion and Western Classical based with original compositions by Baarbad members or arrangements of other composers. Baarbad always attempts to express new ideas such as solo performance concert, which has not been done before, and new arrangements and compositions to promote the culture of music.
For the first time in Toronto Baarbad performed Kurdish Folklore Music in traditional fashion on 16th of February 2008 in Toronto Centre for the Arts. The performance consisted of a collection of folklore songs as well as new arrangements for them to highlight the beauty and exquisiteness of folkloric music, which is the root of many classical repertoires.
Behna ensemble is one of the first fusion bands in Iran to combine traditional instruments with elements of Jazz and Electronic Music. The ensemble founder, Ramin Behna, a graduate of music from Iran Azad University, is a composer and plays Piano, Hammond Organ, and Keyboard. Behna has composed over forty soundtracks and scores for feature films, TV series and documentaries such as “Help Me” by Rasool Mollagholipour, “Stories of Exile”by Fereydoon Hasanpur, “Mutiny Pereiod”and “River Story”by Kamal Tabrizi. He has released seven albums including “Avizheh”, “Ziba Zi”, “Dar’e Ghali”, “Didgah (Vision)” and “Me and My Giant Friend”. In 1999 he won the Golden Sun of Mehr festival for the best New Age, Electronic and Fusion in thirty years. Members of the band include Babak Riahipour (Bass), Kasra Ebrahimi (Drums, Percussions), Behrang Baghaei (Tar, Dotar, Oud, Divan), and Alireza Rahiminejad (Keyboard, Effects). Babak has performed in the world tour of great singers such as Googoosh (the Iranian diva), Mohammad Noori, O-hum, Babak Amini, Kaveh and Koorosh Yaghmaei.

Founded by Hamed Safi in the new millennium, BeatSyndrome quickly acquired a second member, Navid Mehr. Drawn together by their passion for music, it was immediately evident that their ambition to produce a unique new sound within electronic music coincided. Their desire to produce electronic music as a true art form set the stage for their uncompromised sound that carries vividly within their work, speaking directly to our souls, eliciting an emotional response.
BeatSyndrome released their first signed album, “Sting Me”, in 2007 under FullBodySoundSystem, which quickly began to gain attention. It received excellent reviews with tracks such as “Taking Over” and “What About Me” becoming favorites for producers and Dj’s such as Chris Fortier, Thee-o, Damon G, Zimbardo, Kenny Wee, Flash Brothers, Yves Eaux, and Red & Blue. They have worked with many talented artists such as Cold Trap (Madexx), Jk47 (Shift Work), Espen & Elusive (OsloNights), Ladies on Mars (Madexx), Syntax Error and Damon G (FBSS).
They have already worked under such record labels as FullBodySoundSystme, Kult Records, Madexx Recordings, as well as Shift Work Records. BeatSydrome’s first two releases with Madexx Recordings “Space Exploration” EP and “White Label” EP will be released in April of 2008.
Chekavak Ensemble

Chakavak Ensemble was founded by Reza Manbachi in 1998 in Iran and was re-established in Toronto in 2004 after Reza’s immigration to Canada. Chakavak is an ensemble of musicians, founded on the love of Persian music and a desire to promote and perform this tradition at a professional level for Canadian audiences.
Chakavak has given many performances and concerts in Iran and Canada including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston, and Waterloo. Chakavak was also involved in many humanistic and charity events over the past few years.
In January 2006, Chakavak performed a sold-out charity event in which all proceeds were allocated to Bam Art Garden for the sake of those suffering from a disastrous earthquake in Iran. In January 2007, Chakavak performed in a tour devoted to commemoration of the International Year of Rumi, a Persian philosopher and poet, to represent Persian culture and music to audiences from wide backgrounds in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Their Toronto concert was performed twice and sold-out both times.
A talented soprano singer and composer, Darya Darvar is a graduate of the National Conservatory in Toulouse, who lives in Paris, France. She performs regularly in many countries such as the United States, Canada, Sweden, Germany,and United Kingdom.
In 2003 she was invited to Iran to perform an Opera with Armenian Symphony Orchestra. The piece was composed and directed by Loris Tjeknavorian, and was based on the tragedy of “Rostam and Sohrab” from the old Persian epic, Shahnameh.
In addition to her vocal performances, Darya is gifted in arranging melodies in a modern style. By using her captivating voice, she produces a unique blend of opera and traditional music of Iran. She sings in various Iranian dialects, such as Azari, Kurdi, and Guilaki. Through her performances, she invites us on a musical journey to Iran. By mixing Persian music with jazz and blues elements, she creates a world where different cultures are unified.
Iranian National Choir began its musical activities in January 2007. This choir was founded by Iranian-Canadian students and other Iranian music lovers in Toronto and is registered in the University of Toronto.
The choir has the pleasure of having Mr. Kamal Taravati as its music director. Mr. Taravati has many years of experience in teaching, writing and conducting music. The goal of this choir is to preserve, and to promote Iranian music in Canada.
This choir has performed three successful concerts in Toronto so far. Its third concert was held on April 19, 2008, with the collaboration of Association of Gilan Supporters, to commemorate the musical work of late Mr. Ahmad Ashourpour. The choir is performing for the fourth time in Toronto by taking part in the “Yeki bood, yeki nabood” Festival. The choir will be performing independently again in November 2008.
Based in Los Angeles, The Lian Ensemble is a group of virtuoso performers and composers. Their powerful compositions fuse the Mystical Persian musical heritage with the contemporary sensibilities of postmodern Jazz. Combining a unique musical vision with dauntless dedication to experimentation, they create a synthesis of mystical world music composed of traditional and folk melodies and instruments. Lian Ensemble members include Houman Pourmehdi (Percussionist, Composer, Tonbak, Daf, Ney, Tas, Zarb-E-Zoorkhooneh, Dayereh, Kurekeh, Cajon), Mahshid Mirzadeh (Santur, composer), Pirayeh Pourafar (Composer, Tar, Setar, Tar Bass, Robab), and Mani Bolouri (Kamancheh, Gheychak, composer).

A group of young talented students from Shawrak Music Centre will perform various pieces of music. Shawrak Music Centre (www.shawrak.com) was founded in 2006 by Nazila Eftekhari and Moe Fotovat to inspire students of all ages and from all cultures to become involved and learn about traditional Iranian music and western classical music. “Once Upon A Time” brings the students and instructors together in one performance to introduce the aspiring future generation of musicians in Toronto .

A child prodigy, Trichy Sankaran had his early musical training under great masters. At the age of ten, Sankaran met Pandit Ravi Shankar and played a solo for him. Sankaran’s first trip abroad was to Shiraz, Iran in the year 1969 where he played at the Shiraz International Music Festival. He has won many honors and awards. He has released several solo albums and has recorded with many well known traditional and contemporary musicians.
Trichy Sankaran is a world-renowned percussionist. He is the co-founder of Indian music studies and professor of music at York University. He has performed at major festivals in India, South East Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America. In his 55 years of concert experience in traditional South Indian classical music, he has maintained his heritage and has passed on his music to younger generations who have become performers and music educators themselves. In addition, he has performed on four continents with jazz, electronic, and African music ensembles including his own group Trichy’s Trio, Nexus, and the World Drums. He has composed works for contemporary Gamelan, Jazz, South Indian dance, and numerous other chamber orchestras, and World music ensembles. He has dedicated himself for the cause and propagation of Canrnatic music in various ways –as an educator, global artist, composer and collaborator.
Reza Manbachi, a Persian-Canadian musician and composer, has played tar and setar (long necked Persian lutes) for over 17 years, under the instruction of Maestro Hamid Motebassem, Maestro Dariush Pirniakan, Tofigh Iranparvar, and Amir Koushkani. He has studied different renditions of the radif (repertoire) of Persian classical music including "Aghahosseingholi", "Mirza-abdollah", and advanced repertoire (radif-e aali) of "Master Shahnazi".
While in Iran , he was actively involved in a number of concerts namely in Sharif University and Vahdat Hall. He established Chakavak Ensemble in 1998 in Iran . Chakavak performed in many concerts featuring both Rezaʼs compositions and new arrangements of othersʼ compositions over the past years.
After his immigration to Canada, Rezaʼs passion not only drove him to reach new heights by continuing Chakavak Ensemble in an environment unfamiliar with Iranian Classical music, but he was also able to recruit and familiarize many non-Persian individuals with various cultures and backgrounds. His expertise has led him to conduct solo and duet performances mainly with experienced musicians such as Babak Amini (Persian guitar virtuoso), Attila Darvas, Daniel Stones, and Anthony Michelli. He has taught Tar and Setar at York University
at World Music individual instruction courses.
Amir Manbachi, born in Tehran in an art-dedicated family, started learning Tombak from his very childhood and continued professionally under the supervision of Maestro Arzhang Kamkar, Maestro Arash Farhangfar, as well as Amin Kargaran and Mohammad-Ali Nikpanjeh. Amir has been a tenure member of Chakavak Ensemble for several years, performing with other experienced musicians whose contributions are well-known specifically within the Persian-Canadian Community. He has also had the very opportunity to learn various skills of theoretical music, from his Brother, Reza Manbachi as well as the popular Jazz Drummer, Gregg Brennan.
His passion to develop research skills and his dedication to contribute more to humankind, has taken him to University of Toronto (where he obtained his Engineering Degree from) as well as Harvard and Oxford Universities . In addition to Tombak, he also plays Tar and is familiar with Persian music repertoire (Radif).
Masoud Shoari started playing santur at the age of 13, and later on, he turned to setar under the supervision of Dariush Talai. In 1982 he started practicing tar with Master Mohammad Reza Lotfi and Master Bahari, but his vocation for playing setar became most apparent under the teaching of Master Hossein Alizadeh. For the past ten years, he has been teaching setar and theory of traditional Persian music in Tehran's Azad University, "Hamsaz" musical center, and other private and public musical centers. Shoari has performed in many concerts in Iran and abroad as a soloist (Beitoddin Festival in Beirut, Belgium and Italy), as well as in the ensembles of Hossein Alizadeh and Shahram Nazeri. So far he has recorded four albums including solos and a duo for setar/tabla.

Hossein Behroozinia acquired training with great masters such as Reza Vahdani, Mansour Ebrahimi (Nariman) and Mohammad Reza Lotfi. He continued to establish an extensive career in music as a musician, composer, and an educator. Hossein Behroozinia has performed on numerous albums of celebrated Iranian composers as well as on all the released works of Dastan Ensemble. His discography includes Barbat, Koohestan, Yadestan, Vajd (Midnight Sun), Dastan Trio, Shurideh, Gol-e Behesht. He taught extensively at the Tehran Conservatory of Music and the Center for Preservation of Music in Iran. He was also a member of the celebrated ensembles such as Mowlana, Aref, and later, Dastan Ensemble (1992). He currently resides in Vancouver, Canada where he teaches Persian music.

This is a collaboration of two outstanding Ensembles performing contemporary Persian classical music. Original compositions that will bring the two Ensembles to speak with the same voice are the essence of their unique performance.
Shiraz Ensembles:
Shiraz Ensemble is a Classical Persian Music ensemble inspired by the passion of Persian art music repertoire. It is founded by outstanding musicians in Canada, collaborating with others from all around the world. The members of the Shiraz Ensemble benefit from a very strong background of musical training with great diverse experiences. Shiraz Ensemble aims to perform Persian art music with repertoire of original contemporary compositions as well as classical pieces.
In Shiraz Ensemble, nimbly and finely, Nazila Eftekhari plays on Santur (Persian wooden-hammered dulcimer), Shahin Fayaz works on the soulful and profound sound of Rubab (Afghani short-necked lute), highly innovative, Saeed Kamjoo performs with Kamanche (bowed spike fiddle) and creates a very passionate and soulful music, renowned virtuous master of Tomabak (goblet drum) Pedram Khavarzamini is the percussionist, and passionate soloist Araz Salek Plays the Tar (long-necked Lute).
Namad Ensembles:
Namâd is a contemporary Persian classical music Ensemble. It was formed by five outstanding musicians to play original compositions on both modern and classical poetry of Iran. Passionate and hunting melodies that are performed by Kourosh Taghavi on the Setar and Saeed Kamjoo on the Kamanche and Queychak find their oneness when percussions by Mehrdad Arabi and Afshin Mehrassa colorfully create the needed space in which the beautiful voice of Khosro Ansari tells the stories of our time. Namâd Ensemble has toured extensively throughout California performing its original compositions (Ossyan) which is based on the poetry of Forough Farrokhzad and Siavash Kasraei (both contemporary poets of Iran).
For several years and in two incarnations, Soul Nidus has been creating music - along with a growing buzz that started in Canada and has reached across the Atlantic to Europe and as far as two of the band members' native Iran.
With the universal appeal of songs evoking the softer side of the Foo Fighters, and ranging to jams reminiscent of bands like Audioslave, Soul Nidus' music maintains a beautiful, unique flavour throughout.
In 2007, the band flew to the UK for a number of intimate live shows, as well as interviews and acoustic sessions on national radio (BBC World, Kerrang! Radio) and appeared as featured artists on Total Rock Radio's "Brave New World" show to promote the UK release of their latest album, "STOIC".
Due to the trio's stage presence, SOUL NIDUS has been dubbed a "Live Band" by fans and critics. Every show is unique - whether it's by playing different versions of songs or simply improvising on stage.

and intelligent techno beats, deliciously served with beautiful chord stabs, Technofunk Collective gained their reputation within the electronic music community.
Constantly influenced by the ever expanding possibilities of musical performance with various technologies, the collective has built its own interfaces
to better expand their creative freedom.
